Every spring, parents ask me the same question: “What should my student do this summer to stand out?” The honest answer is that no single activity wins on its own. What wins is the right experience, at the right grade, with the right people guiding it.

The short answer

Depth beats a longer list.

For a student who already has a real question, mentored research that ends in finished, written work usually tells admissions readers the most about how that student thinks. Internships show how a student applies what they know. Summer programs are strongest as exploration, especially in Grades 8 to 10. The best profiles often use more than one, in a deliberate order.

What admissions readers look for in an activity

Selective colleges read an activities list the way a good editor reads a manuscript. They aren’t counting. They’re looking for a throughline, the one or two interests that show up again and again and get deeper each year.

When a reader looks at any summer or school-year experience, four questions are running in the background:

  • Depth. Did your student go past what a classroom already teaches?
  • Initiative. Did your student choose the question, or just show up?
  • Evidence. Is there something finished to point to: a paper, a project, a result?
  • Story. Does this experience connect to the rest of the application, the essays, the intended major, the recommendation letters?

Participation is not the same as achievement. The structure around an experience decides which one your student ends up with.

That’s the lens for everything below. Research, internships and summer programs can each score well on these four questions, or poorly, depending on how they’re chosen and supported.

Think of it as a progression: summer programs build exposure, internships build application, and research builds investigation.

Research: turning curiosity into academic depth

Research fits the student who keeps asking “why,” “what if,” and “could this be done differently.” It’s the closest thing high school offers to the work your student will do in college, which is exactly why admissions readers pay attention to it.

A complete research experience has a recognizable shape:

  1. Choose a topic and narrow it to a real research question
  2. Review what’s already known
  3. Design a method and form a hypothesis
  4. Collect or analyze data, sources or models
  5. Write a paper, then revise it with expert feedback
  6. Submit it to a journal, competition or conference

Research is not just for future scientists

Many families assume research means a lab coat. It doesn’t. A future economist can model financial markets. A student drawn to law can study how courts are handling artificial intelligence. A history lover can investigate a primary-source question. Psychology, philosophy, linguistics, education and business are all fair game.

The difference a mentor makes

Independent research shows initiative, but most high school projects stall somewhere between step two and step five. Without an expert to push back on the method, it’s hard to finish something a college reader will take seriously.

What a reader remembers

“Tested whether music-listening habits predict anxiety and depression using machine-learning models; wrote a 20-page paper with a PhD mentor and submitted it for peer review.”

That second line only exists when someone qualified guides the work and someone holds your student to a timeline. It’s the reason structured, mentored research programs have grown so quickly, and the reason we point research-ready SSCEA students toward RISE Global Education.

Internships: connecting academics to the real world

A good internship shows a college that your student can be trusted with real responsibility. It also answers a question students rarely get to test early: do I actually want to do this for a living?

The catch is that the word “internship” covers everything from meaningful project work to a summer of making copies. What separates the two is almost always mentorship, a supervisor who assigns real work, gives feedback, and can later write about your student in specific terms.

“Built a cost model for a solar retrofit with a project engineer, presented it to the design team, and saw it adopted in the client proposal.”

Encourage your student to keep a simple log while they work: what they were responsible for, the problems they hit, the skills they built, and what changed in their thinking. That log becomes raw material for essays and interviews a year later.

Research can open internship doors

Many students under 16 can’t land a formal internship, and many labs won’t take a student who has never done research. Finished research changes that conversation. One RISE scholar, now at UPenn, put it simply: “My research paper with Nathan helped me secure an internship at a professor’s lab.” Research first, then the internship, is a sequence we plan for often.

Summer programs: exploration before specialization

Summer programs are at their best early. A Grade 8 or 9 student who spends two weeks in a neuroscience, engineering or entrepreneurship program learns fast whether the interest is real, and that answer is worth a lot.

What summer programs usually can’t do on their own is demonstrate depth. Admissions readers know that many programs accept anyone who pays tuition. Two things raise their value:

  • Selectivity. Competitive, often low-cost or free programs carry more weight than open-enrollment ones.
  • What comes next. A summer program that leads to a deeper project the following year becomes the opening chapter of your student’s story instead of a line item.

For example: a Grade 9 summer program sparks an interest in neuroscience, Grade 10 adds related coursework and a hospital volunteer role, and Grade 11 turns a question from that experience into a mentored research paper. That is a profile with a spine.

Timing: the next cohort

RISE follows a 1:1 mentorship model, so mentor availability is limited and tends to fill closer to each deadline. The application deadline for the Winter 2026 cohort is November 30, and selected students choose a start date that works for them.
