The Common App officially opened on August 1 — which means the 2026–2027 admissions cycle is no longer approaching, it's here. Seniors now have a live application and seven essay prompts in front of them. Juniors are heading into the year that will define their college list. And for every underclassman, August is the quiet head-start window before homework, practices, and fall schedules take over the calendar.
This is the month that separates the families who build momentum from the families who spend October catching up. Here's everything you need to know — and exactly what to do about it.
The August Admissions Moment
The Common App Is Open
The 2026–2027 essay prompts are unchanged from last cycle — all seven, including "Topic of Your Choice," the most popular option. Rising seniors can start brainstorming today.
Fall Testing Window Opens
The next SAT is September 12 (regular registration closes ~August 28). The next ACT is September 19 (regular registration closes mid-August). Seats fill quickly — register now.
FAFSA Countdown Begins
The 2026–2027 FAFSA opens October 1. August is the month to create your FSA ID and gather tax documents so you're not scrambling when the form goes live.

ACT Regular Registration Closes (Sept 19 Test)

SAT Regular Registration Deadline (Sept 12 Test)

- Choose your essay prompt and get a full first draft down before homework ramps up
- Request 2-3 letters of recommendation THIS WEEK — go in person, bring a resume
- Register for the September SAT or October ACT if scores could still strengthen your application
- Confirm your Early Decision or Early Action strategy and build a master deadline tracker
- Start gathering financial documents now so FAFSA filing on October 1 takes minutes, not hours
This Is the Year Your College List Gets Built
- Meet with your counselor in the first two weeks of school to review your course schedule
- Ask about your school's PSAT date — most are administered in October
- Take a diagnostic SAT or ACT practice test this month to build your testing strategy for the year
- Start a running list of colleges as you learn about them — refine it all year, don't rush it now
- Deepen 2-3 extracurriculars rather than adding new ones just to pad a resume
